Abstract:

The sixth generation (6G) mobile networks will reshape the world by offering instant, efficient, andintelligent hyper-connectivity, as envisioned by the previously proposed Ubiquitous-X 6G networks.and global connectivity will introduce tremendous challenges into the operation and management of 6G networks, calling for revolutionary theories and technological innovations. To this end, we propose a new route to boost network capabilities toward a wisdom-evolutionary and primitive-concise

RESPONSE OF WHEAT COMPOSITE CROSS POPULATIONS TO DISEASE AND CLIMATE VARIATION OVER 13 GENERATIONS

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 8, Issue 3,   Pages 400-415 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2021394

Abstract:

Since the F5 (2005), three winter wheat composite cross populations (CCPs) based on germplasm specifically suitable for low-input conditions were subjected to natural selection under organic and conventional management. In the F6, each CCP was divided into two parallel populations (12 CCPs in total) and maintained continuously until 2018. Commonly used modern cultivars with different disease susceptibilities were grown alongside to assess the agronomic performance of the CCPs. The organically managed CCPs were comparable in yield and foliar disease resistance to two continuously used reference cultivars, Achat and Capo. In contrast, under conventional management the cv. Capo outyielded the CCPs (Achat was not tested), highlighting the importance of parental cultivar choice for specific management systems. The CCPs were found to be moderately resistant to brown rust and even to the newly emerged stripe rust races prevalent in Europe since 2011. Differences between the CCPs were mainly due to parental genetic background and were significant in the first five generations, but were no longer so in the last five generations. In addition, these differences tended to vary depending on the experimental year and the environmental stresses present. In conclusion, the CCPs despite being derived from older cultivars are able to compete with more recently released reference cultivars under organic farming practices and represent a dynamic germplasm resource.

Novel interpretable mechanism of neural networks based on network decoupling method

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2021, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 572-581 doi: 10.1007/s42524-021-0169-x

Abstract: The lack of interpretability of the neural network algorithm has become the bottleneck of its wide application. We propose a general mathematical framework, which couples the complex structure of the system with the nonlinear activation function to explore the decoupled dimension reduction method of high-dimensional system and reveal the calculation mechanism of the neural network. We apply our framework to some network models and a real system of the whole neuron map of Caenorhabditis elegans. Result shows that a simple linear mapping relationship exists between network structure and network behavior in the neural network with high-dimensional and nonlinear characteristics. Our simulation and theoretical results fully demonstrate this interesting phenomenon. Our new interpretation mechanism provides not only the potential mathematical calculation principle of neural network but also an effective way to accurately match and predict human brain or animal activities, which can further expand and enrich the interpretable mechanism of artificial neural network in the future.

An evolutionary note on smart city development in China Personal View

Ruizhi LIAO(1,2), Liping CHEN(3)

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 6,   Pages 966-974 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2100407

Abstract:

Urbanization is an important indicator of a country’s degree of modernization. According to the World Urbanization Report by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, more than 55% of the world’s population lives in cities, with this figure projected to rise to 70% by 2050 (United Nations, 2018). China’s urban population accounts for 60% of the national total in 2020, and is expected to reach a very ambitious rate, 80%, by 2050 (Deloitte, 2018). More people living in cities means more contests over limited urban resources, such as water, housing, transportation, education, and health care. To cope with the challenges brought by the urbanization trend, David Bollier from the University of Southern California raised a new idea for city planning: a comprehensive network and applications of information techno-logies (Bollier, 1998). IBM later echoed the idea and initiated its Smart Planet vision in 2008 (Palmisano, 2008). At that time, it was a brand new concept to empower and transform urban infrastructure, services, and management. Quickly afterwards, the smart city concept has been adopted by major cities throughout the world, and it has gradually evolved into a strategic choice by ambitious cities—aiming to compete for urban development, and to provide easy-to-use but efficient functionalities. In this paper, we discuss the essence of a smart city, investigate three driving forces of smart city development in China, summarize the key features of smart cities in China and other countries, and raise four big challenges that deserve careful thoughts on building future smart cities.
